The Ghana Travel Starter Guide
Everything a first-timer needs to know — no fluff, no "contact us for prices." Read it in 15 minutes, then let Kofi build your actual itinerary.
1. When to go
Ghana is warm year-round, but timing changes the trip completely:
- November–March — dry season, best weather. December is festival season ("December in Ghana"): concerts, beach parties, and the biggest diaspora homecoming of the year. Book by August.
- April–June — rainy season, fewer crowds, lower prices. Fine for Accra and Kumasi; the north stays drier.
- July–August — short dry spell. Good value window.
2. What it actually costs (2026)
| Item | Typical range |
| Accra city tour (half/full day) | $65–150 |
| Cape Coast + Elmina day trip | $80–200 |
| Cape Coast + Elmina + Kakum combo | from $170 |
| 5–7 day heritage trail (hotels, guides, transfers) | $1,400–2,000 |
| December in Ghana, 7–9 days | $2,400–3,950 |
| Private guide per day | $80–150 |
| Castle entry (foreign visitors) | $6–15 |
| Travel insurance (Nomad Insurance — medical + travel cover) | Get a quote → |
International flights aren't included. 1 USD ≈ 11.6 Ghana cedis (GHS) (live rate, updates automatically).
3. The classic first-timer route (7 days)
- Days 1–2, Accra: land, recover, Makola Market, National Museum, Independence Square, Osu nightlife.
- Days 3–4, Cape Coast & Elmina: both castles, the Door of No Return. Give this two days — one day feels rushed for what it means.
- Day 5, Kakum: canopy walkway in the morning, back to Accra by evening. Pairs naturally with the coast.
- Days 6–7, Kumasi: Ashanti Kingdom — the palace, Kejetia Market, Kente weaving villages.
On the castles: these visits hit hard, especially for diaspora travelers. Go with a guide who knows the history, take your time, and don't schedule anything demanding right after. It's okay to feel a lot.
4. 20 Twi phrases that open doors
- Akwaaba — Welcome
- Wo ho te sɛn? — How are you?
- Me ho yɛ — I'm fine
- Medase / Medase paa — Thank you / Thank you very much
- Me ma wo ha — Good morning (greeting)
- Maakye — Good morning (response)
- Maaha — Good afternoon
- Maanadwo — Good evening
- Yɛbɛhyia bio — We'll meet again (goodbye)
- Nante yie — Go well (farewell)
- Eyɛ sɛn? — How much is it?
- Ɛyɛ den? — What's the price?
- Ma me… — Give me…
- Mepɛ… — I want…
- Obra yɛ dɛ — Life is sweet
- Gyae me — Leave me alone (useful, kindly)
- Wo din de sɛn? — What's your name?
- Me din de… — My name is…
- Wo firi he? — Where are you from?
- Mefiri… — I'm from…
Greet everyone — shopkeepers, drivers, elders. In Ghana, skipping the greeting before the question reads as rude. A warm "Maakye!" first changes every interaction after it.
5. Packing: the short list
- Light clothes, but pack one respectful outfit — you'll want it for the castles and any chief's palace.
- Good walking shoes (castle grounds and markets are uneven).
- Sunscreen and insect repellent. Malaria prophylaxis — talk to your doctor before you go.
- A universal power adapter (Ghana uses UK-style Type G plugs, 230V).
- Cash in USD to exchange, plus a debit card that works abroad. Mobile money is everywhere once you're set up.
6. Money & safety basics
- Visa: most visitors need one — check Ghana's embassy site for your country well ahead. Some nationalities get visa on arrival; don't assume.
- Safety: Ghana is one of West Africa's safest countries for tourists. Normal city smarts apply: watch your phone in crowds, use registered taxis or ride apps at night, and don't flash cash.
- "Obroni price": in markets, the first price is a starting offer. Bargain with a smile — it's expected, not confrontational.
- Health: yellow fever vaccination is required for entry. Drink bottled or treated water.
7. December in Ghana — worth it?
Yes, with eyes open. December is electric: concerts, Detty Rave, beach festivals, and thousands of diaspora travelers home at once. It's also the most expensive month — hotels and flights surge, and crowds are real.
Honest note for 2026: not all major festival lineups are confirmed yet. Book refundable flights and hotels, and don't anchor your whole trip to one event. The country itself is the main event.
✈️ Check flight prices to Accra on Expedia (affiliate link — costs you nothing). For December, book refundable and go early: prices jump hard after September.
