You'll land thinking you'll buy "a few souvenirs." You'll leave wondering how a third suitcase got involved. This is normal. Here's how to shop Ghana well — what everything means, what it's actually worth, and where to find the real thing.
Kente is hand-woven strip cloth from the Ashanti (and Ewe) people, and every pattern has a name and a proverb behind it. It's not decoration — it's literature you wear. That's why it matters that you buy the real thing.
Adinkra symbols are the Akan visual language — each one is a compressed proverb, traditionally stamped onto cloth. A few you'll see everywhere:
You'll find Adinkra on cloth, jewelry, t-shirts, and wall art. Knowing what your symbol means before you buy it isn't required — but it changes how you wear it.
Ankara — the bold wax-print fabric you see all over West Africa — is beautiful, but it's factory-printed cotton, not hand-woven, and not Ashanti in origin. Sellers won't always volunteer the difference. Now you know it.
Bargaining, done right: it's expected in markets — but lead with a greeting, not a number. "Maakye!" first, smile, then offer around two-thirds of the asking price and meet in the middle. Haggling like it's a fight insults the seller; haggling like it's a conversation delights them. Fixed-price shops and malls don't bargain — don't try.
There's something powerful about landing in Accra already wearing your heritage. Akonua is our sister brand making heritage wear for the diaspora — the signature piece is the Golden Stool "Take Your Seat" tee, built around the Akan symbol of unity and kingship, alongside Adinkra, Sankofa, and kente-band designs. Order before your trip and you board the plane already home.
December flights to Accra are the most expensive tickets you'll buy all year — book early and watch for deals. Our friends at Love Vacation Deals keep a running Ghana page with flight and package deals, including Detty December options. Pair that with our Starter Guide's cost breakdown and you'll know a good fare when you see one.
How much does real kente cost?
Roughly $80–$300+ for a full hand-woven cloth, $20–$50 for stoles and strips. Printed fabric is far cheaper — check the back of the cloth.
Can you bargain in Ghana's markets?
Yes, warmly. Greet first, offer about two-thirds, meet in the middle. Don't bargain in fixed-price shops.
What's the difference between kente and ankara?
Kente is hand-woven Ashanti strip cloth with named proverb patterns. Ankara is factory-printed wax cotton. Both beautiful — only one is kente.
What do Adinkra symbols mean?
They're visual proverbs: Sankofa (learn from the past), Gye Nyame (faith), Dwennimmen (humble strength), and dozens more.
Where's the best souvenir shopping in Accra?
Makola Market for prices and energy, Osu and the Arts Centre for a calmer browse, Bonwire village near Kumasi for kente from the weavers themselves.
Transparency note: Akonua and Love Vacation Deals are sister sites of ours — same family, different projects. We link them here because they're genuinely useful for this trip, not because anyone paid for placement.
